As soon as the elevator doors closed, nobody spoke, and everyone avoided eye contact. But then a man standing in the corner of the elevator broke the silence.
"I bet you're all wondering why I gathered you here," he said.
Before anyone could respond, the man reached out and hit the emergency stop button on the control panel. The elevator came to a screeching halt with a loud grinding noise.
Everyone started talking to him, asking what the emergency was, but he ignored them, and a sinister grin spread across his face.
Then, he produced a gun and aimed it directly at them.
"Now, I need you all to be very quiet," he said. "And to listen to me very carefully."
The group froze in fear, as the man explained that they were all participants in a deadly game.
They had been chosen because they shared the same psychological profile: a willingness to take risks and a need for power.
The man stole everyone's phones and destroyed them; nobody was going to be able to call for help. He explained that all they had to do was to survive for 24 hours in the elevator by answering his riddles, and they'll be freed.
As the hours ticked by, the group tried to keep their cool and solve the riddles the man threw at them, but they quickly realized that each riddle was a little more difficult than the last. They had no idea what was going on, and soon their minds began to race with thoughts of never escaping.
Finally, as the 24th hour approached, the elevator began to move again. At last, the group thought they would be freed from their captivity. But as the elevator doors opened, the police were waiting for them. The man had been caught, and he was now in police custody.
The group later learned the man was a serial killer who had kidnapped and killed several other people in the past. It was only through their determination and quick thinking that they'd managed to outsmart him and escape alive.
